Goro From Mortal Kombat

Computer generated graphics used in film lack the ability to interact on screen with actors. Because of this limitation many directors require physical effects to be created for use with the actors on set. This image is from the archives of Amalgamated Dynamics Inc., an effects company specializing in this area. This is a hard fiberglass copy of the suit that Tom Woodruff wore for the character of Goro in Mortal Kombat. Since it was already based on the character from the video game ADI had certain design elements that had to be incorporated into the creature but they also went a little bit further. They wanted to make it slightly more realistic and not quite as comic book inspired as the artwork they had seen up till then. ADI also chose mostly for sake of time to build the creature as a man in a suit with the upper arms, head, face and neck being completely mechanically articulated. All of those actions were operated by puppeteers who were feeding their information into a computer. There was a lot of technology that was developed for this character in a very short period of time. Ultimately the suit weighed in at about 125 pounds which Toom Woodruff had to carry on my shoulders. There was a metal brace that went down his spine to his hips which displaced some of the weight but even with that it was still very heavy, confining and hot. His head was in the chest of the creature and since Goro had no body armor or any kind of costume that would help hide any type of air slits or even eye holes ADI ended up building a fiberglass helmet that Tom wore. Inside that helmet Tom had a small video screen so he could see what was going on. There were tubes running up inside that they could plug into under the loin cloth so that in-between shots Tom could get fresh air and water I needed in order to be able to stay in this suit for hours at a time.
