TENTACLE GRABS LEG
This is also a reverse film test. It would be almost impossible for the
tentacle puppeteers to reach out and grab a walking person's leg, and
there was also the danger of damaging the tentacle itself (by stepping
on it, or yanking it too hard). So we shot the shot backwards. We
started with the tentacle carefully curled around Wilson's leg. He then
walked backwards (so he'd look like he was walking forward when the
shot was reversed) while the puppeteers uncurled the tentacle and
pulled it away faster than he was walking. This exact same technique
was used in the actual film, when the tentacle grabs Burt's leg in the
basement attack scene. It was also used when the tentacles swarm out
of the Graboid's mouths and for a number of other shots.
