We don’t start from theme when we write. We start from story or a given set of circumstances (What if there was an underground monster sort of like a shark?). Then we flesh out characters. In the case of Tremors we deliberately tried to make the characters NOT the cliches they’d be in a 50s monster movie, for example. That then drove other decisions. People sometimes see and assign themes to our work after the fact, but it’s not something we consciously try to implement.
