Seen through a modern day lens, would it be fair to consider any entry of Tremors “woke”? With their diverse casts, strong female leads and insistence on thinking over brute force, a strong case could be made for Yes. Additionally, is that down to your own progressive tendencies? Nancy once spoke about how “strong, smart women” is one of Steve’s fortes. Are you simply speaking into existence something you see or wished to see more of?

We were writing in opposition to the stereotypes seen in the B monster movies we grew up with, so a smart strong female character was a given. Similarly, Val and Earl are not the experts you usually see in those movies. So yes, Tremors is probably woke by today’s standards, partly by design and partly by a desire to do something fresh.

Were Graboids based on the Mongolian death worm cryptid?

No, we were unaware of it. The first ideas were based on sharks and we even called the early notes “sand shark” and “land shark.” But SNL beat us to that. That said, it’s amusing to see current illustrations of the Mongolian worm that really look like graboids.

Where can I get an Atlanta Hawks hat exactly like Burt’s? I only see them with somewhat different designs.

We’re not aware of any company making that specific design these days.

Can any other fans help out here?

Sept 2025: Help from fan Levi has arrived with this detailed response. Hope it leads to hats for all who want them.

“Where to find Atlanta Hawks hats.” The artist “BTOSurplus” on Etsy makes the BEST recreations of the Hawks hats from Tremors 1, 2, 3, Series and 5 as well as Earl’s Alumax hat from Tremors 1. Link found here. Really great work at a reasonable price. The only one that I have ever found to make them consistently.

How did the idea for Burt Gummer come about?

We wanted a diverse population for the town of Perfection. Survivalists stockpiling guns and seeking isolation were a “thing,” even way back then, so it was a no-brainer to include one. Then we elaborated to make it a man and like-minded wife.

How did Graboids first appear? what produced the egg?

Well, that’s the age-old question for all life forms really, famously asked of chickens. Graboids must have evolved from an earlier creature, perhaps one first relying only on metamorphosis, but over time established the 3-phase cycle that included the egg-laying ABs.

Do Graboids have some type of echo-location. How do they navigate underground?

Very definitely. They are all about sound/vibration and use it to navigate, identifying underground obstacles and even soil density (lighter being easier to move through). They are probably able to communicate with one another, too, perhaps clicking beaks or wriggling their movement spikes in distinctive ways.

When you make the new Tremors, I want to work on it!

We are getting this question a lot now and certainly appreciate the enthusiasm and love for Tremors. First, there is no new Tremors yet, but we are hoping there will be. Second, if we are so lucky, we’ll need traditional experienced movie crew. We can’t randomly invite outsiders to work on set, even if they want to do it for free.

What will a new Tremors be like?! How will it change? Will the graboids look different? Please stay with practical effects! What can Universal still do? Etc!!

We get many versions of this question. What creatures will there be? What characters will be back? Many include suggestions (like even how to “explain” Tremors 5, 6 and 7, which we have no desire to reference.) And some ask what Universal can still do on their own. Now that we have the rights to our first script, we are trying to figure all that out. But there’s no point in fantasizing or speculating unless/until someone is willing to finance something. We aren’t there yet [July 2025]. We can say that if we get the opportunity we will push for using practical effects over computer-generated.

How do Graboids poop? In Tremors the Series, Larry picks up the key to the vault as if it was sitting on top of the ground. But Burt and Heather could find no spoor. What does it smell like?

Our feeling is they poop underground, like sea creatures poop in the sea. They are inherently streamlined and leave it straight behind them as they go their merry way. It wouldn’t make sense to surface and advertise their presence to animals that are their prey. If you were unlucky enough to encounter some, it would undoubtedly smell at least as bad as the graboids themselves. Larry’s finding of the key was perhaps an anomaly.

Can you expound on the civics of Perfection at the time of T1? Were there street names? Was there a mayor (presumably Chang?)? Did the town have any visitors or tourism? Also, did Old Fred or Edgar ever frequent Chang’s for a beer?

No street names. There’s only one street! No Mayor, though Walter Chang probably held the most power. Yes, Old Fred and Edgar definitely stopped in from time to time. For the original town, visitors would have been few — off roaders and occasional desert campers. More of course when Jodi Chang started promoting graboid tourism).

What is your favorite memory working on a Tremors film? Conversely what is your least favorite memory working on a Tremors film?

Least favorite is easy: it’s the night of the sinking car what wouldn’t sink. There are many fun moments, though, so it’s hard to choose. Maybe the graboid bursting through the wall in Burt’s basement, as the shot worked exactly as we hoped and planned. Being there when actors made lines even better than we thought, or did fun surprise adlibs (like Val punching the graboid tentacle in Rhonda’s truck). Many! Working on Tremors was fun!

If Burt Gummer is based on S.S. Wilson, are there any other characters based on the Stampede Entertainment team? I’d guess that Nancy Sterngood might be named after Nancy Roberts.

It’s a bit of a stretch to say Burt is “based on” S. S. Wilson. If anything, Wilson adopted more of a Burt lifestyle later, pursuing solar power, etc. Yes, using the name Nancy was a mini-thanks to Nancy Roberts, who worked so tirelessly behind the scenes to get the movie made. No other characters have Stampede connections. We just populated Perfection with folks like those we’d seen and met in our early days roaming tiny desert towns.
